Twenty.
That is how many Ultra AI uses a Canva Pro subscription gets you each month, and Ultra is the tier where Canva keeps its headline feature, the conversational Canva AI that builds a design from a sentence. It is also where text-to-video sits. Twenty is fine if you try the thing on a Friday afternoon. It runs out by Wednesday if you make it part of how you produce a week of social posts.
I read the three Canva vs Adobe Express comparisons that rank for this keyword before writing this. They run from roughly 1,500 words to about 8,500, and the long one, from Style Factory, is genuinely thorough. All three agree on the shape of it: Canva is the broader tool with the bigger template library and the better collaboration, Adobe Express is cheaper at the entry level, cleaner to look at, and better if you already live in Photoshop and Illustrator. ZDNET adds that Express exports better PDFs and lets a brand team lock templates. Style Factory lists the AI allowances for each plan.
Nobody does the arithmetic on those allowances for a real working week. That is the gap this page fills, because on these two tools the AI meter matters more than the sticker price.

What each one actually is
Canva is a design app that grew into an everything app. Social posts, presentations, documents, whiteboards, websites, video. Its AI sits under the Magic Studio name (Magic Write, Magic Resize, Magic Grab, Magic Expand and a long tail more) plus Canva AI, the chat-style assistant that drafts designs and edits them on request.
Adobe Express is Adobe's answer for people who will never open Photoshop. It covers fewer formats and does them tidily. The AI comes from Firefly, Adobe's own image models, which Adobe trained on licensed Adobe Stock content and public-domain material rather than scraped images. That training detail is the single biggest reason a marketing team picks Express, and Adobe knows it.
The short answer
| Canva | Adobe Express | |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Yes, with a small monthly AI allowance | Yes, with limited free daily generations and 5GB storage |
| Individual plan | Pro, $144 a year in the US (monthly billing costs more) | Premium, $9.99 a month |
| Team plan | Business, $250 per person a year | Teams, $7.99 per user a month ($4.99 the first year), 2-seat minimum |
| How AI is metered | Three tiers. Pro: 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses a month | Generative credits. Premium: 250 a month |
| Not metered | Background Remover, Magic Eraser, Magic Expand and some others, at fair use | Text effects and Clip Maker |
| Storage on the paid individual plan | 100GB | 100GB |
| Brand kits | 1 free, 5 on Pro, 100 on Business | None on free, unlimited on paid plans |
Adobe's numbers are from its Express pricing page as of October 2026. Canva's allowances and prices are as reported by several pricing guides published this year. Canva has also changed Pro's price more than once since 2024, so check on the day you buy.
Canva: the one that does everything
Canva gets you to a finished file faster. There is a template for almost any format you can name, and Magic Resize turns one finished Instagram post into a LinkedIn banner, a story and a print flyer in about the time it takes to type the sizes. Bulk Create, which fills a template from a spreadsheet, is the feature small-business owners discover in month three and then cannot live without. It is also the design pick in our AI tools for content creators roundup.
Collaboration is better too, mostly because comments and shared folders work the way people already expect from Google Docs. Five people working in one Canva account produce designs that look like one company made them, and the Business plan's 100 brand kits cover an agency juggling clients.
The weakness is sprawl. Canva's menus have grown with every launch, and I still lose a minute or two hunting for a Magic tool I used last week.
Adobe Express: the one that stays polished
Express templates are fewer and, frankly, nicer. They look designed, and they avoid the instantly recognisable Canva look that a sharp-eyed client will spot from across a room.
The handoff is where it earns its place. If your brand team works in Illustrator, Express exports PDFs that keep their layers, and assets move between Express and Creative Cloud without a round trip through a download folder. ZDNET also credits it with platform safe zones, the guides that show where Instagram or TikTok will cover your design with buttons. Small thing. Saves a re-export.
Firefly's commercial-safety story is real but narrower than the marketing suggests. It covers what Firefly generates. It does not cover the photo a colleague pulled from a Google search and dropped into the template.
The part nobody prices: what a week of AI actually costs
Here is the angle the top results skip.
Canva sorts its AI into three drains. Standard covers light text work. Premium covers image generation in Dream Lab, Magic Design, Magic Charts and Canva Code. Ultra covers Canva AI's conversational design and text-to-video. On Pro the allowance is 2,000 Standard uses, or 200 Premium, or 20 Ultra, and the pricing guides I read agree it is a shared pool, so heavy Ultra use eats into everything else. Failed generations count. A prompt you rewrite four times before the layout is right costs four uses, so if a finished design typically takes four tries, Pro's real ceiling on Canva AI is five designs a month. Run out and those features wait for the next billing cycle unless you buy more.
Adobe meters in generative credits. Premium gets 250 a month, Teams gets 250 per user, and Adobe's help center says most standard features cost about one credit per generation while premium features cost more. Two Express features, text effects and Clip Maker, cost nothing at all. When the credits run out, Adobe says it will not charge you unless you choose to buy an add-on.
So the comparison flips depending on which AI you use. If your AI work is background removal, erasing a stray coffee cup and resizing, Canva is the better deal, because those tools sit outside the allowance entirely. If your AI work is generating images from prompts every day, Express's 250 credits stretch further than Canva Pro's 200 Premium uses, and you pay less for them. If you wanted Canva AI to design for you, budget for Business, which doubles the pool to 40 Ultra uses, or for an add-on.
My rules:
- On Canva, write the brief before you open Canva AI. A good first prompt saves three Ultra uses.
- On Express, generate images in batches of variations and pick, instead of regenerating one at a time.
Track your first month on either. The number you actually use will surprise you, in one direction or the other.
Which one to pay for
Pay for Canva if several people make designs, the formats change weekly, and most of your AI use is editing photos and resizing rather than generating from scratch. It is the safer default for a small business, a school or a social team, and the free plan is good enough to test that properly.
Pay for Adobe Express if you already pay for Creative Cloud, a brand team hands files to designers, or your legal team asks where every generated image came from. At $9.99 it is also the cheaper way to get daily image generation.
If you schedule what you design, our AI social media management tools guide covers the posting half.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Canva better than Adobe Express?
For most people and most teams, yes. Canva has more templates, more formats and stronger collaboration. Adobe Express is the better pick for Creative Cloud users, brand teams that hand files to designers, and anyone who wants Firefly's commercially safe image generation at $9.99 a month.
How many AI uses does Canva Pro include?
Canva Pro includes up to 2,000 Standard, 200 Premium or 20 Ultra AI uses a month. Ultra covers Canva AI's conversational design and text-to-video. Tools such as Background Remover, Magic Eraser and Magic Expand sit outside the allowance at fair use.
What happens when Adobe Express generative credits run out?
You wait for your monthly reset or buy more credits through a Firefly add-on plan. Adobe says it does not charge for extra credits unless you choose to buy them. Text effects and Clip Maker in Express do not use credits.
