Surfer SEO vs Clearscope: Which to Pay For in 2026
Surfer SEO vs Clearscope priced per document and per writer: what each plan buys at your publishing cadence, team size, and where a content score stops paying.

$6.45 a draft.
That is what Clearscope's Essentials plan works out to if you use every one of the 20 drafts it gives you each month. Surfer's Standard plan, read the way its billing suggests, comes to about $3.30 a document. On a per-article basis Surfer is half the price, and for a solo writer that settles it.
For a team of six it does not. Clearscope puts unlimited users on its cheapest plan, and Surfer charges for seats.
What the other comparisons cover
I read the three Surfer vs Clearscope comparisons that rank highest for this keyword, skipping directories and review aggregators. RivalFlow's runs to about 2,200 words, and the ones at SEOwind and Search Atlas run closer to 3,000. All three walk through an overview of each tool, the content editor, competitor research, pricing and AI writing features, then add pros and cons.
All three were also written by a company that sells a third content tool, and each ends by recommending it. That is fine as marketing. It does mean nobody in the top three has a reason to tell you which of these two to buy, and none of them do the arithmetic that decides it: what a plan costs per document at the rate you actually publish, and per person who needs a login. Their price lists also disagree with each other and with both vendors' current pricing pages, which is what happens when a comparison is a side project.
What each one actually is
Surfer is a content editor that scores your draft against the pages already ranking for your keyword. Enter a target keyword, Surfer analyzes the top results, and you get a Content Score built from word count, headings, keyword usage and related terms, updating as you type. Around that it has grown into a broader SEO suite: AI drafting, internal linking and cannibalization reports on the higher plans, and tracking for how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers.
Clearscope does the same core job with less around it. You get a report of the terms and topics the top pages cover, a grade for your draft, and integrations for writing inside Google Docs and WordPress. It also watches your published pages and tracked queries, so you know when an older article starts slipping. Its AI helps a writer along and stops short of drafting the article.
Surfer wants to be where SEO work happens. Clearscope wants to be the tab your writer keeps open.

Prices are from surferseo.com/pricing and clearscope.io/pricing as of October 2026. Surfer's page shows yearly billing and a $240 saving on Standard, which puts month-to-month at about $119. Both companies change plans often, so check before you budget.
Per document: where Surfer wins
Surfer's page says Standard lets you create or optimize 360 documents. It does not say whether that allowance resets monthly or yearly. I read it as yearly, because the price shown is billed yearly, and that gives 30 documents a month for $1,188 a year. About $3.30 each.
Clearscope's Essentials gives you 20 drafts a month for $129. Use all 20 and each one costs $6.45. Publish 25 a month and the five extras cost $50 apiece, so the month comes to $379 and the average draft to about $15. That jump is the number to watch. Clearscope prices are gentle up to the allowance and steep past it.
If you are one person putting out four or more posts a month, Surfer is the cheaper tool and it is not close. Our small business AI tools guide set four posts a month as the point where a $99 Surfer plan earns its keep, typically within two to three months, and I have not seen a reason to move that line.
Per writer: where Clearscope wins
Now hand the same work to a team. Six people need to open drafts: three writers, an editor, an SEO lead and the client who wants to see the grade before signing off. Surfer's Standard plan has three seats. Pro has five, at $182 a month. Six people means Peace of Mind at $299, and you are paying for unlimited documents you may never write.
Clearscope's Essentials covers all six for $129. It covers sixty for the same price.
That is the whole case for Clearscope, and for agencies it is a strong one. The bill grows with what you publish, never with how many people look at it, which matches how an agency bills its own clients.
How high to push the score
Both tools will happily let you chase a perfect number. Don't.
In our B2B content marketing workflow test, a Surfer Content Score of 75 or higher reliably improved rankings on competitive keywords. The same test found the catch: the score rewards keyword density and structure, and pushing it hard produces pages that rank and then fail to convert anyone. Use the score as a check that a finished draft covers what the top pages cover. Writing toward it sentence by sentence is how you get the paragraph that says a keyword four times.
Clearscope's grade can be gamed the same way. Where it pulls ahead is earlier in the process: the same test put Clearscope among the brief generators that cut a brief from 45 minutes by hand to 10 minutes of review. In practice, Clearscope earns most of its fee before the draft exists.
One habit works with either. Paste the missing terms into Claude with the draft and ask it to work them in where they belong; our content marketing automation guide found it better than most at avoiding the awkward insertions that make optimized copy read like it was optimized.
Which one to pay for
Pay for Surfer if you write alone or with two colleagues and publish on a schedule. Per document it costs about half what Clearscope does, it will draft for you if you let it, and the AI visibility tracking is a reason to keep it even on months you publish less.
Pay for Clearscope if more than three people need to see a draft before it ships, or if you run an agency and want the bill tied to output rather than logins. Stay inside the 20-draft allowance, or move to Business before the $50 extras pile up.
My own call, for what it is worth: a writer working alone should buy Surfer this afternoon. An editor managing freelancers should buy Clearscope and never think about seats again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Surfer SEO cheaper than Clearscope?
Per document, yes. Surfer's Standard plan is $99 a month billed yearly for 360 documents, about $3.30 each if that allowance is yearly. Clearscope's Essentials plan is $129 a month for 20 drafts, about $6.45 each, and extra drafts cost $50. Per user, Clearscope is cheaper, because every plan includes unlimited users.
How many users do Surfer and Clearscope allow?
Surfer caps seats by plan: 3 on Standard, 5 on Pro and 10 on Peace of Mind. Clearscope includes unlimited users and projects on every plan, starting with Essentials at $129 a month.
What Surfer Content Score should I aim for?
In our testing, a Content Score of 75 or higher reliably improved rankings on competitive keywords. Pushing much past that tends to add keyword density without adding anything a reader values, so treat 75 as a check on a finished draft rather than a target to write toward.
Can Surfer or Clearscope write articles with AI?
Surfer can generate full article drafts from a prompt. Clearscope's AI assists a human writer with the draft and does not try to write the whole article.
